Anna University satellite launch by April 15

CHENNAI: ANUSAT, the micro satellite developed by Anna University, Chennai, will be launched before April 15 this year at Sriharikota. The Rs 6.5 crore project that has been sponsored by the Indian Space Research Organisation is currently under observation at the Indian Satellite Application Centre in Bangalore.

Announcing this on Thursday, Vice- Chancellor P Mannar Jawahar said nearly after five years, the project had been completed successfully by the Madras Institute of Technology. This is the first satellite in the country developed by a university.

Dr A Joseph Stanley, dean, Madras Institute of Technology (MIT), said the team including 10 faculty members and 10 students from aerospace engineering department had worked through various changes including the retirement of project director. The idea was first mooted by the former vice-chancellor of Anna University R M Vasagam, in order to provide students a deeper insight into aerospace engineering.

Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, and Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur are also in the process of developing micro satellites.
